UC Davis and China Mengniu Dairy Company Establish New Nutrition and Health Innovation Partnership

UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi and Yiping (Elaine) Sun, CEO of China Mengniu Dairy  Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding on September 3, 2015 to establish the Mengniu-UC Davis Nutrition and Health Innovation Partnership. This agreement marks the beginning of a collaboration between Mengniu Dairy and UC Davis to develop novel and innovative food systems to improve nutrition and food health for customers, especially in China.  

Chancellor Katehi summarized the depth and breadth of UC Davis’ scientific strengths in agriculture, food and nutrition and her vision to develop new models to bring science to practice through partnerships in innovation. As UC Davis is the global leader in agriculture and veterinary medicine, Katehi believes that the joint venture fits in with UC Davis’s global strategy to solve the issues facing the world in agriculture and food products.

UC Davis’ Food for Health Institute, under the directorship of Professor Bruce German, is among the world leading research centers for nutrition and food health, with milk research acclaiming international fame amongst others. Mengniu approached UC Davis to establish a strategic partnership between like-minded innovators and to leverage UC Davis’ expertise in innovative milk research.

 Bruce German spoke about the unique opportunities to solve many of the great challenges for diet and health in the U.S. and China by this partnership. World Food Center Director Roger Beachy and College for Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Associate Dean Jan Hopmans both affirmed their interests in participating in the collaborative project with Mengniu.

CEO Sun emphasized Mengniu’s eagerness to strategically partner with UC Davis. Mengniu integrates the best resources from around the world to provide Chinese consumers with the most nutritious and healthy products. Sun has hopes that together with UC Davis, Mengniu will develop  quality, innovative nutrition and health foods for Chinese consumers.

Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding has led to initiation of in-depth discussion on several specific issues of collaboration, including exchange of trainees and educators, establishment of sustainable research careers, and a shared digital data system in milk research, led by the Foods for Health Institute.

Katehi, Chancellor; Joanna Regulska, Associate Chancellor and Vice Provost, Global Affairs; Jan Hopmans, Associate Dean, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Bruce German, Director, Foods for Health Institute; Roger Beachy, Director, World Food Center; Linxia Liang, Director, Global Affairs; Bethany Henrick, Associate Director, Foods for Health Institute. University of California attendees included Jagdeep Singh Bachher, Chief Investment Officer and Vice President of Investments, University of California, Office of the President.
