Aggies Abroad Spotlight

UC Davis Quarter Abroad, Spanish Language and Culture, Madrid, Spain

I haven’t talked about my internship yet and I wanted to for those future students doing the same program and have the option. DO IT! It was so rewarding.

I worked as a teacher’s assistant in a local school that had elementary through middle school kids. I personally worked with 10/11/12 year olds either in their English class, or their ‘citizenship class’ that was taught in English. The citizenship class covered various topics from global warming, to world geography and culture.

The internship overall was a great experience. I really felt like I made a difference in the time I spent with the kids and they appreciated having me there. It was a great insight into some Spanish culture first hand and see them excited to speak English with... A Californian!

Confucius Institute at UC Davis Celebrates Grand Opening and Launches Program

The Confucius Institute at UC Davis celebrated its grand opening on September 16, 2013 with food demonstrations by alumnus Martin Yan and two guest celebrity chefs. A dance and song performance, by Jiangnan University students and faculty at the Mondavi Center also commemorated the event. Director-General of Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) Madam Xu Lin, China’s Consul General of San Francisco Yuan Nansheng and Jiangnan University President Chen Jian were present at the grand opening.  Madam Xu shared with the audience a congratulatory letter written by China’s president, Xi Jinping to Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi.

After the grand opening celebration, the Institute has only continued to build on the momentum and excitement. In the two days following the opening, the Institute held a conference on the U.S. wine industry and a field trip to Napa Valley for visitors representing the Chinese beverage industry.

Invited by the International House Davis, the Institute also actively participated in the 3rd International Festival at Veterans Memorial Center on October 12, 2013. The International Festival provides a platform for local people originating from about 30 countries to display their national cultures and to enhance the mutual understanding between different cultures.

At this event, the Institute’s instructors provided more than 300 visitors of different ages and nationalities an interactive demonstration of a Chinese tea ceremony, and a chance to learn Chinese dumpling-making, opening another window for the public to better understand Chinese culture.

The Institute is currently offering monthly dumpling workshops and Chinese tea workshops, as well as celebrations of traditional Chinese holidays and festivals. Language courses and a lecture series will launch in the near future. Registration is required, but all events are open to the public.
