
About Merita Dema
Ms. Merita Dema studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Ss. Cyril and Methodius, North Macedonia, and holds an MSc in Power Systems from the same university. As a certified electrical engineer from the Chamber of Authorized Engineers in North Macedonia, she has led the planning and execution of multiple energy projects.
With 13 years of experience in the energy sector, Ms. Dema has held several leading roles in her country. Before attending the Humphrey Fellowship Program, she served as Head of the Energy Market Monitoring Department at the Energy Regulatory Commission of North Macedonia, overseeing energy market operations, regulatory compliance, and energy efficiency initiatives. Previously, she worked as an electrical engineer and head of the engineering group at the Electricity Distribution System Operator, served as Deputy Head of the Electricity Department at the Energy Regulatory Commission, and was appointed by the Parliament as Commissioner at the Energy Regulatory Commission, gaining extensive expertise in policy development, market regulation, and project implementation.
Ms. Dema has participated in prestigious international programs, including the U.S. Department of State IVLP, the Chevening in the United Kingdom, and numerous professional trainings across Europe. She is a cofounder of an NGO dedicated to promoting sustainable energy initiatives and environmental awareness in North Macedonia, while empowering communities to adopt renewable energy solutions and enhance environmental stewardship.
As a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow, she aims to strengthen her leadership, innovation, and expertise in sustainable energy and environmental practices, expand her global professional network, and implement forward-looking solutions for energy in North Macedonia. She aspires to foster a more sustainable, equitable, and environmentally responsible energy sector in her country and the region.
