Language and Academic Support for Multilingual Students
International and Academic English strives to ensure academic success for multilingual students, both undergraduate and graduate, by using data to identify barriers to multilingual student success and partnering with campus entities to build programs to overcome them. As part of its mission, International and Academic English ensures that multilingual students—a population that represents the majority of UC Davis’ total student body—are given fair and equitable access to opportunities and resources and develops programs that build their academic intercultural communication skills and confidence.
International and Academic English provides these primary programs:
Pal Program
Offered throughout the academic year, this program pairs UC Davis undergraduate students for intercultural conversation experiences. Participants can use these sessions to increase their intercultural awareness, learn more about language and cultural differences, and develop friendships.
Summer Start
Offered every summer, this is a 6-week academic and cultural program for incoming first year international students that runs during Summer Session II. Participants have access to a carefully selected menu of courses that position them to get ahead on their degree and adjust to life at UC Davis.
Language and Culture Coaching
Offered throughout the academic year, this program helps multilingual graduate students work toward developing their oral English skills so that they can communicate effectively as Teaching Assistants.
Test of Oral English Proficiency (TOEP)
International and Academic English also offers the Test of Oral English Proficiency (TOEP), an exam used to determine whether prospective Teaching Assistants have met the language requirement. This test is offered at the end of summer and each academic quarter.
