Faculty Funding and Short-Stay Opportunities

Below is a curated list of annual funding and short-stay opportunities available to UC Davis faculty, organized alphabetically by the country of origin. These opportunities are offered through partner institutions and select governmental funding agencies, and most require that proposals be submitted in collaboration with a co-PI based at a partner institution or at an institution in the respective country or region. Each entry includes the typical application deadline month and a link to more detailed information. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list; we will continue to update it regularly. Global

Seed Grants for International Activities

Global Affairs, in partnership with UC Davis schools and colleges, Inclusive Excellence and the Office of Research, announces grants of up to $20,000 for innovative and interdisciplinary international research. This year’s focus includes funding for CAMPOS or CAMPSSAH scholars and collaborations with Taiwan and/or Italy.

Grants for Advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Global Affairs, Inclusive Excellence, Grand Challenges and Sustainability announce grants to promote multidisciplinary collaborations advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Up to five grants of $7,500 will support innovative projects addressing global challenges. These grants foster partnerships that engage diverse stakeholders and promote sustainable solutions.

Australia

Collaborative Funding Programs

CSIRO has joined with the United States' National Science Foundation (NSF) to accelerate joint research, and initiatives in areas of mutual priority between Australia and the United States.

Belgium

Flanders Research Foundation (fwo) Scientific Research Network Grant

This grant supports researchers with the coordination of Scientific Research Networks. These are international networks of researchers that encourage national and international cooperation. A Scientific Research Network consists at least of: three research groups from at least two eligible host institutions within the Flemish Community and a minimum two research groups from research institutions from the French Community and/or from abroad. Applications generally open in April and close in September.

KU Leuven Global Seed Fund

KU Leuven announces the second Global Seed Fund call, starting July 3, 2025, to support international research collaboration. UC Davis is invited to apply for up to €30,000 per project. Applications are due 9 October 2025. Projects begin January 2026.

China

Fudan-UC Center Small Grants

The Fudan-UC Center offers small grants of up to $6,000 to support China-related lectures, workshops, or conferences organized by UC faculty. Funding ranges from $1,000 for a single lecture to $6,000 for multi-participant events. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted at least 45 days before the event date.

Fudan-UC Center Major Conference Grant

Each academic year, the Fudan-UC Center awards one major conference grant of up to $25,000 to fund a large-scale China-focused event. UC faculty applicants must submit proposals by October 1 and are encouraged to secure matching funds. Proposals are evaluated based on academic merit, budget, and external funding potential.

Excellent Young Scholars Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China

Germany

Walter Benjamin Programme

The Walter Benjamin Programme enables researchers in the postdoctoral training phase to independently conduct their own research project at a location of their choice. The project can be carried out at a research institution in Germany or abroad, with the host institution providing support for the project..

Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) Research Fellowships        

Research Fellowships are intended to help early career researchers to conduct a defined project at a location of their choice in a country other than Germany and to use it as an opportunity to familiarise themselves with new research methods or to bring a large project to a conclusion.

Emmy Noether Programme

The Emmy Noether Programme gives exceptionally qualified early career researchers the chance to qualify for the post of professor at a university by leading an independent junior research group for a period of six years. The programme is open to postdocs and junior professors with temporary contracts who are at an early stage in their research careers. Holders of a junior professorship with a positive interim evaluation are no longer included in the target group for this programme, and are not eligible to submit proposals or receive funding.

Heisenberg Programme

The Heisenberg Programme is directed primarily at those researchers who have qualified for professorship via the Emmy Noether Programme, leadership of a junior research group, DFG project staff positions, private-sector research or mid-level faculty positions. The target group also includes junior professors who have received positive evaluations, those who have achieved their habilitation or an equivalent qualification, and German researchers returning from abroad, as well as appropriately qualified foreign researchers (who have not yet achieved a full professorship) looking to pursue careers in Germany.

Collaborative Research Centres

The Collaborative Research Centres (CRC) programme by the German Research Foundation (DFG) funds long-term, interdisciplinary research at German universities for up to 12 years. CRCs support innovative, complex projects, foster structural development, and promote early career researchers. Funding covers staff, equipment, training, international cooperation, and science communication.

Naveen Jindal Young Global Research Fellowship Programme

O.P. Jindal Global University invites applications for the fully-funded Naveen Jindal Young Global Research Fellowship—a one-month residency for Ph.D. scholars and early-career faculty under the age of 42. The fellowship offers global mentorship, interdisciplinary research, writing workshops, cultural immersion and academic networking.

Japan

Grants in Aid for Scientific Research KAKENHI

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) offers Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI) in categories such as Scientific Research (A/B/C), Challenging Research (Pioneering/Exploratory), and Early-Career Scientists. Applications generally  open July  and close September. Proposals must be submitted via the JSPS Electronic Application System through affiliated institutions.

Mexico

Small Grants for Conferences and Travel

Alianza MX announces a call for proposals for small grants to support the following activities: presenting research at a conference or workshop or performing at an event in Mexico; or hosting a conference, workshop, or performance related to Mexico at a UC campus. Through this call, University of California (UC) researchers can apply for up to USD $5,000 in funding for activities scheduled to take place from September to February.

IGMS (Integrated Grant Management System) supports researchers and grant managers handling grants from Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF), Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Education (MOE), and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). These agencies drive national efforts in R&D, healthcare, education, and innovation to foster economic growth and global scientific leadership.

Collaborative Online International Learning Grant (COIL)

The NTU COIL Grant supports faculty to collaborate with partners from overseas institutions to develop undergraduate (UG) courses during the semester or special term, enabling NTU and overseas students to learn together through a hybrid (in-person and online real-time learning) or virtual (synchronous and asynchronous learning) format.  An optional learning trip to an ASEAN-China-India (ACI) country may be included.

South Korea

Korea University 2025 Climate Corps Summer School

The Climate Corps (CC) is an initiative that unites higher education institutions to co-generate impactful solutions for climate crisis. It harnesses the collective expertise, resources, and influence of member universities. CC aims to create a collaborative platform across disciplines and institutions, facilitating knowledge sharing, fostering innovative solutions, and driving the implementation of effective strategies to combat climate crisis.

University of Zurich Global Funding Scheme 2025

Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) Taiwan Fellowship

The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship supports foreign scholars researching Taiwan, cross-strait relations, the Asia-Pacific, or Sinology. Open to academics worldwide, it offers monthly grants, travel, and insurance for 3–12 months of research in Taiwan. Applications are accepted in May–June, with research starting the following January.
