Cultivating Global Learning Through Course Curricula

About the Program
The Global Affairs Curriculum Enhancement Through Global Learning program, a faculty development opportunity that supports the university-wide Global Education for All initiative, will provide UC Davis faculty with concrete tools for globalizing teaching and preparing students for success in a globalized world.
The program offers an opportunity for UC Davis faculty members from all disciplines, colleges, and schools to make their course content, teaching techniques, and students’ experiences responsive to current global challenges and opportunities. It assists faculty in developing global learning frameworks and practices, grounded in theory and with measurable outcomes.
Now in its third year, the Curriculum Enhancement program has a proven track record of success in cultivating cohorts of campus educators who become ambassadors for global learning at UC Davis and share their knowledge, experiences, and skills with colleagues long after the program ends.
Call for Applications
Global Affairs seeks applications from Academic Senate and Academic Federation faculty members with full-time appointments who teach degree-seeking students from all UC Davis schools and colleges.
This academic year the Curriculum Enhancement program will welcome a cohort in spring quarter 2021. The call for spring quarter 2021 is now open with a deadline of March 5, 2021.
The selected group will meet three times over spring quarter 2021 to explore avenues for globalizing the student experience, with an additional required meeting on May 21, 2021, that will wrap up and present the cohort’s work. Program participants will have the opportunity to:
- Develop global learning outcomes and assessments for any course, regardless of subject matter or discipline
- Infuse courses with interactive learning strategies for global content
- Apply diverse perspectives to course materials
- Learn how technology can be employed to internationalize the curriculum
- Review examples of curriculum internationalization across all disciplines
Please note: it remains the responsibility of individual faculty members to ensure that any changes to course curricula are approved through appropriate academic and administrative channels whenever applicable.
Participants commit to a series of four meetings, each approximately three hours long, between April 2021 and May 2021. Since this is a learning community, participants are expected to prepare for and engage actively in each session.
The meetings are scheduled for Fridays from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. via Zoom:
- April 2, 2021
- April 16, 2021
- April 30, 2021
- May 21, 2021 (final presentations and awarding of certificates)
Participants are required to attend every meeting and will also be invited to attend a series of extracurricular, non-required enrichment workshops that will explore complementary topics in global learning. Those who miss more than one of the required meetings will not be eligible for the honorarium upon completion.
Workshops that supplement and enrich the Curriculum Enhancement through Global Learning program will be offered throughout the winter and spring terms. These include:
- January 22, 2021: Global Learning and the Health Professions: A panel discussion with panelists from the schools of Veterinary Medicine, Medicine, and Nursing. Click here to register.
- May 7, 2021: A presentation on integrating global learning with public scholarship and engagement, co-sponsored by the Office of Public Scholarship and Engagement
- Presentations on Virtual International Collaboration and Exchange (COIL model)
UC Davis Academic Senate and Academic Federation faculty members with full-time appointments who teach degree-seeking UC Davis students are eligible. All UC Davis locations are eligible. (Please note all meetings will take place via Zoom.)
Faculty should apply individually, but we encourage multiple applications from the same academic department, college, or school. Applying with a partner or partners helps to create localized nuclei of expertise on campus for increased global learning impact. If you choose to apply with one or more partners, please indicate your partner’s or partners’ name(s) on your application.
Faculty members who complete the program will receive one-time funding from Global Affairs of $300 to assist them in adapting their course(s) to incorporate global learning.
