About Tapiwa Banda

Tapiwa Banda has almost a decade of work experience in both the private and public legal sectors. Currently, she is chief law reform officer at the Law Commission of Malawi. Tapiwa is also vice president and co-founder of Movement for Environmental Action (MEA), an environmental activist organization. Through Tapiwa's leadership, MEA has been involved in the research and development of progressive environmental laws and policies, such as the introduction of an Environmental Tribunal to Malawi. Further, MEA has advocated for the compliance of the thin plastics ban by large manufacturers. MEA has also organized and collaborated with communities to carry out several cleanup and tree-planting activities in its efforts to preserve the environment. Tapiwa holds a bachelor's degree in Law, a master's degree in Environmental Law and Sustainable Development, and a diploma in Legislative Drafting. She also was the recipient of the 2014 Edward Elgar Prize. After completing the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, Tapiwa plans to apply her public management skills to improve the law reform services at the Law Commission and to increase the outreach and impact of MEA.
