In her role as a Senior Divisional Engineer, she focuses on advancing renewable energy projects, particularly hydroelectric and solar power, to enhance Nepal's energy capacity. Her efforts are directed toward creating sustainable energy policies, modernizing the power grid, and addressing both immediate and future energy needs while prioritizing environmental sustainability. Her understanding of electrical engineering has evolved from seeing it as solely about power transmission to recognizing the importance of consumer needs and system adaptability.
Nepal's goal to replace 40% of LPG usage with electricity faces challenges such as outdated infrastructure and limited resources. However, significant progress has been made, transitioning from severe power cuts in 2015 to becoming a power surplus and beginning exports to India and soon Bangladesh. With over 3.2 GW of installed capacity, more than 60% from Independent Power Producers (IPP), Nepal is advancing towards sustainable energy development.
The Humphrey Fellowship offers a valuable opportunity for Laxmi to gain further expertise in project planning, financing, and energy policy formulation. Engaging with international experts will provide diverse perspectives and enhance her ability to contribute to Nepal's energy sector and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Effective leadership in natural resources and climate change requires collaboration, evidence-based decision-making, and community engagement, which she aims to further develop through the Fellowship.
