About Agathe Diama

Smart Food Systems | Innovation Catalyst

Agathe Diama is a trained social anthropologist (University of Bamako, Mali), with additional training in the management of development (University of Turin, Italy), communication, and journalism. With nearly two decades of experience, she focuses on transforming agriculture, food systems, and nutrition through communications and engagement on climate-resilient strategies.

Agathe is deeply committed to advancing sustainable food systems. At the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics, Agathe served as head of communications and later as coordinator of the Smart Food Initiative in West and Central Africa, a major regional effort promoting sustainable climate-smart and nutrition-sensitive food systems for food security and nutrition. Her collaborative approach in agricultural research for development includes working closely with farmers, researchers, academic institutions, policymakers, and the media. Currently, she contributes as an innovation catalyst at the Global Forum on Agricultural Research and Innovation.

As a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow at the University of California, Davis, she seeks to collaborate actively with experts and thought leaders in the United States to gain insights into sustainable agriculture, environmental policy, and innovative food systems, with the aim to drive impactful initiatives in Mali and across the Sahel region.
