In Memoriam: AJ Leeds

AJ Leeds, Global Affairs’ travel security manager, passed away on February 6. This is a heartbreaking loss for Global Affairs and the many colleagues across UC Davis and the broader UC community who had the privilege of working with him. 

AJ joined Global Affairs in 2019 and quickly became a trusted leader in advancing travel security for the university. He worked closely with partners across campus, in California and beyond, most notably to establish our campus travel security policy, which ensures that university travelers going abroad receive relevant safety briefings before and during their travel. His commitment to safeguarding our community was unwavering, and his thoughtful, solutions-oriented approach kept global engagement and the adventure of travel at the heart of his work. Colleagues often noted his calm guidance during complex international travel situations, where his steady leadership helped ensure the safety and well-being of students, staff, and faculty abroad. It was his voice on the phone during travel emergencies, reaching out to confirm a traveler’s safety or to advise on alternatives to ensure it. His work strengthened the university’s ability to support safe and successful international collaboration. 

AJ’s impact on Global Affairs, UC Davis and across the UC system was profound,” said Joanna Regulska, vice provost and dean of Global Affairs. “He was someone I relied on completely — thoughtful, knowledgeable, and always willing to go above and beyond to ensure others felt prepared and supported. AJ strengthened the foundation of our travel safety program and set a standard others looked to follow. What I will remember most is his genuine care for people. That compassion defined both his work and who he was.” 

AJ brought energy, insight, and warmth to every interaction. He cared deeply about his work and about the people around him. AJ was committed to advancing the university’s mission and understood the importance of relationships, connections, and travel. 

“AJ was not only a valued member of the UC Davis community but an absolute asset to the UC system and a dear friend. AJ’s kindness radiated from him. He was a leader on the UC Global Risk Council and showed up every Friday ready to discuss international travel safety and security. He shared his knowledge and experience freely and was always ready to lend a helping hand in a complicated situation. He cared deeply about travelers and was passionate about this work. It is an honor to call him a colleague and a friend. His absence will continue to be felt by all who knew him,” said Julie Pollard, director of international health, safety, and crisis management at the University of California Education Abroad Program. 

We extend our deepest condolences to AJ’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. His legacy will endure through the people, partnerships, and programs he helped strengthen across our university community, as well as through all the travelers who returned home safely.
