The TA Language Requirement App is a database that shows whether students have met the TA/AI Language Proficiency Requirement. Students should use TALRA to check their status, and staff/faculty should use TALRA to check a student's status before hiring them as a TA/AI.

Please note that only active UC Davis graduate students may register for the exam. Students who have taken the TOEP in a previous term must have completed 20 hours of English instruction before they can retake the TOEP.

The SPEAK Test is one method that multilingual graduate students can use to demonstrate that they have the requisite oral skills to hold TA or AI positions, but this exam is no longer offered at UC Davis.
The Office of Graduate Studies requires all graduate students, except those with an undergraduate degree from an institution where English is the sole language of instruction (according to the World Higher Education Database or the Office of Graduate Studies), to demonstrate oral English proficiency before they are appointed to Teaching Assistant (TA) or Associate Instructor (AI) positions.
The Test of Oral English Proficiency (TOEP) is an exam used to determine whether prospective TAs have met the TA/AI Language Proficiency Requirement. It is a 20-minute classroom simulation in which test takers introduce themselves to a class, highlight key information from a sample course document, and deliver a mini-lesson on an academic topic of their choice.
Students who sign up for coaching must attend the sessions that they sign up for. If your availability changes or if you need to reschedule or cancel a session, please follow the guidelines below.

In LCC, multilingual graduate students work toward developing their oral English skills so they can communicate effectively as TAs. In this personalized program, students can choose which areas they want to focus on and receive instruction in a flexible, personal setting.
Students are welcome to participate in coaching regardless of their current TA eligibility. Whether you're a future TA or a TA with years of experience, you're welcome to join us and work on developing your skills and confidence.
