From mitigating food insecurity to coordinating COVID-19 treatment trials, UC Davis alumae Michelle Lee and Emily Fehrman are putting their degrees—and global learning experiences working alongside communities—to work during the pandemic.

The two-time Academic All-American and 2019 team captain Tiger Garcia pursues the world’s most prestigious international postgraduate scholarship, The Rhodes Scholarship.

UC Davis alumnus and ant morphologist Brendon Boudinot, who received his doctorate in entomology in June, is the recipient of the coveted Robert E. Snodgrass Memorial Research Award from the Entomological Society of America.

For the second time in the past three years, UC Davis has been recognized as a top producer of Gilman Scholars for the 2018–19 academic year—with the university producing the third highest number of Gilman Scholars, at 51, among all U.S. universities with over 15,000 undergraduates.

When the Yolo Food Bank began running a new delivery service to meet the increased need for food in Davis and its surrounding communities in Yolo County during the COVID-19 pandemic, UC Davis delivered volunteers, including staff members, undergraduate students, and visiting Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows Issam Chariag of Tunisia, Fabrice Inkonkoy of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Zuomei Ning of China.

Thanks to her experiences growing up in Taiwan, immigrating to the U.S., interning with the US Environmental Protection Agency via the UC Davis Washington Program, and studying environmental science in three countries, ESM major Annie Chen is ready to take on the world.

The inaugural SDG Interns are Christal Juarez, a fourth-year anthropology major in the College of Letters and Science, and Jeanett Lor, a fourth-year human development major in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Through the SDG framework, which provides concrete steps to achieve sustainable development across the planet’s economic, social and environmental dimensions, these interns are working with a shared global ethos and connecting with people throughout the world who are also dedicated to their fulfillment.

The UC Davis Global Learning Hub announced the cancellation of Spring Quarter and Summer Session study abroad programs, but it has yet to decide the fate of Fall Quarter programs.

While many students study abroad to fulfill a language requirement, or to learn more about the culture of a country, UC Davis water polo players Julia Hartmann and Allyson Clague went for an entirely different purpose — thermodynamics.

As county residents continue to shelter in place, the Yolo Food Bank is running a new delivery service with the help of UC Davis staff members, students, and Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows.
