Chancellor’s Statement on Pandemic’s Toll in India, Elsewhere

Today, UC Davis Chancellor Gary S. May issued the following statement in support of those impacted by the pandemic’s toll in India and around the world:

I am deeply troubled by the increase in COVID-19 cases around the world, especially in India, where cases are spiking and people are in grave danger. It is just heartbreaking. I recognize that many of you have connections to India and other countries that have been deeply affected by the pandemic. To those struggling, we acknowledge the distress, the loss and the enormity of what’s happening. It is a tragic reminder that we are still in the midst of emerging from this global public health crisis.

For students: If you need additional support, please reach out to your professors and department supervisors. You may also find that talking to someone is helpful in processing everything you are going through. Make an appointment through Student Health and Counseling Services, which provides services to all registered students in the U.S.

For scholars, faculty and staff: The Academic and Staff Assistance Program (ASAP) offers confidential and cost-free assessment, counseling, consultation and referral services to all UC Davis and UC Davis Health faculty, staff, scholars and families. For those located in Davis, please call 530-752-2727 for an appointment. For those in Sacramento, please call 916-734-2727 for an appointment.

As always, international students and scholars can contact our Services for International Students and Scholars (SISS) office within Global Affairs by emailing siss@ucdavis.edu, and you can find your advisor’s contact information on the SISS website.

Our sympathies are with our students, international scholars, faculty, staff, alumni and partners who have been impacted by the devastating toll of the pandemic in India and around the world.

Please continue to follow UC Davis safety practices, which are aligned with county public health guidelines. We are all in this together.
