Fred Boll Joins Global Affairs as Executive Director of the Global Learning Hub
The UC Davis Global Learning Hub (GLH), part of Global Affairs, is excited to welcome Alfred (“Fred”) Boll as its new executive director. Boll joined the Hub's experienced and committed professional team on December 30, 2024. The GLH offers global learning programs, workshops, and resources that enhance UC Davis students’ academic, civic and career pursuits through four broad areas of opportunity: community engagement, global skills and leadership, internships and research, and study abroad.
“We are thrilled to have Fred join Global Affairs and look forward to his leadership and insight in guiding the next phase of the Global Learning Hub’s development,” said Nancy Erbstein, associate vice provost of global education at Global Affairs. “Fred’s academic and professional achievements highlight his dedication to global engagement and passion for creating inclusive educational opportunities. His leadership will play a pivotal role in advancing the Global Learning Hub’s mission, fostering a just and interconnected global community.”
Boll’s distinguished career includes leadership roles at the U.S. Department of State, where he oversaw units that support global education domestically and internationally. Most recently, Boll also shared his expertise as a lecturer and mentor in the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s experiential study away program, Wisconsin in Washington.
Boll’s professional experience extends beyond government and academia, having contributed significantly to the INGO sector. Through these roles, he has built an extensive global network and advanced international education and engagement. Boll holds an MA in Latin American and Iberian Studies, a JD, and a doctorate in international law. He has specialized knowledge and experience in international humanitarian law and human rights and brings a remarkable working knowledge of twelve languages.
Boll emphasized how honored he is to join the GLH team, saying, “I feel so privileged to be given the opportunity to be a part of the Global Learning Hub’s dynamic and dedicated team, and the UC Davis community. I look forward to working with colleagues to build on the Hub’s strong foundation to further expand inclusive opportunities for students to connect, learn and lead globally.”
Boll succeeds Zachary Frieders, who, as the founding executive director of the Hub, played a key role in shaping its vision and success to date. Frieders is now the associate program director for study center operations at the University of California Education Abroad Program.
“Please join me in welcoming Fred to the UC Davis community. I am confident that his vision and expertise will continue extending the Global Learning Hub’s impact on our students, our campuses and the broader global community,” Erbstein said.
