Global Education for All

The University of California has built a $34 million dining facility that offers international dishes from Indian shrimp curry to Tuscan kale and white bean soup in a bid to celebrate diversity and make overseas students “feel more at home”. 

Four faculty and staff members spanning four UC Davis colleges, schools, and units were honored by Chancellor Gary S. May as Chancellor’s Awards for International Engagement recipients. One member of the Academic Senate and one member of the Academic Federation received the Academic Senate’s Excellence in Teaching in Study Abroad Awards. This year’s recipients of various Global Affairs grant and development programs were also announced, including the inaugural Grants for Advancing Sustainable Development Goals.

On campus and around the world, UC Davis faculty, students, and staff are addressing all 17 SDGs in various teaching, research, and service activities. The inaugural Grants for Advancing SDGs support work already underway and spark new partnerships. The five selected projects contribute towards 14 of the SDGs—locally and globally—bringing together more than 12 UC Davis colleges, school, and units, and more than 10 external partners.

Literary scholarship at the nexus of human rights and climate change has earned English major Jumana Esau ’20 a prestigious Gates Cambridge scholarship. The scholarship will fully fund Esau to earn her Master of Philosophy in Criticism and Culture at the University of Cambridge, where she plans to study climate fiction with the author Robert Macfarlane.

The Peace Corps announced today (Feb. 26) that UC Davis ranks No. 23 among large universities on its 2020 list of top volunteer-producing colleges and universities. Currently, 42 campus alumni are serving as Peace Corps volunteers in countries around the world. Since the Peace Corps’ founding in 1961, over 1,550 UC Davis alumni have served as Peace Corps volunteers.

From his first days at UC Davis, Adrian Gonzales '20 knew he wanted to study abroad. This past summer, his dream became reality as he took his education across the pond, traveling to the United Kingdom to study organizational management amidst the international business world.

UC Davis has gone from University Farm to global education powerhouse, and it’s time to shout about the things that make us great, Chancellor Gary S. May said Monday (Jan. 27) at the 2020 Kickoff Celebration, an unveiling of plans to increase visibility and awareness of UC Davis.

The Global Education for All Fellowship is a campuswide student committee created to further develop and implement Global Education for All—a goal aiming to provide 100% of UC Davis undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with global learning opportunities.

As mayor of the city of Davis from 2016 through 2018, Robb Davis was tasked with guiding the city through a divisive and turbulent time in national politics that at times played out locally. As mayor, Davis approached that challenge by trying to “help people work together to solve problems,” he said. It’s a common thread that runs through his new work at UC Davis.

Events include documentary screenings, field trips to farms in the Sacramento region, research presentations, and forums that consider the complexities and importance of food, bringing attention to a variety of topics ranging from nutrition to agriculture, economics to politics, and education to ecosystems.
