UC Davis is the lead institution on a global classroom pilot project, partnering with Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico and Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China to create a framework for teaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using a global classroom model that has been developed and utilized by Tecnológico de Monterrey and will be enhanced by UC Davis and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

The inaugural SDG Interns are Christal Juarez, a fourth-year anthropology major in the College of Letters and Science, and Jeanett Lor, a fourth-year human development major in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Through the SDG framework, which provides concrete steps to achieve sustainable development across the planet’s economic, social and environmental dimensions, these interns are working with a shared global ethos and connecting with people throughout the world who are also dedicated to their fulfillment.
On campus and around the world, UC Davis faculty, students, and staff are addressing all 17 SDGs in various teaching, research, and service activities. The inaugural Grants for Advancing SDGs support work already underway and spark new partnerships. The five selected projects contribute towards 14 of the SDGs—locally and globally—bringing together more than 12 UC Davis colleges, school, and units, and more than 10 external partners.
Last summer, UC Davis biomedical engineering major in the College of Engineering Laura Oelsner traveled to Nicaragua to serve students with special needs and create community programs focused on improving literacy, food security, and vision.
The Global Education for All Fellowship is a campuswide student committee created to further develop and implement Global Education for All—a goal aiming to provide 100% of UC Davis undergraduate, graduate, and professional students with global learning opportunities.
During the 2019 International Education Week at UC Davis, Global Affairs featured short films by UC Davis students describing their study, research, and service experiences from 10 countries around the world. From studying GIS in Bhutan, to protecting sea turtle eggs in Taiwan, to treating elephants in Thailand, and studying fashion design in France, students shared from their wide array of experiences and provide a vision for what is possible for other students at UC Davis.

The answer appears obvious, but there’s another correct response found a hemisphere away, in Talca, Chile – home of the Universidad de Talca. Because this international city and university already share many similarities with the City of Davis and UC Davis, learning about the unique approaches each takes on issues related to sustainability become especially relevant according to the Universidad de Talca’s Sustainability Manager and self-proclaimed “Biggest Fan of Davis,” Pablo Yáñez, after a recent trip.
