Human Rights Educators USA, or HRE USA, has named Keith David Watenpaugh, professor and founding director of Human Rights Studies at UC Davis, the recipient of its O’Brien Award for individual achievement for 2021.
Over the course of two academic years, the Campus Global Theme program identifies a topic linked to one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and connects the entire UC Davis community in discussion, learning, discovery and action that is personally, academically and professionally significant.
UC Davis was recognized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for ranking 11th among large institutions in the number of Gilman recipients over the past twenty years in the following category: 20-year Overall Top Producer – Large Institution.
Global Affairs staff are returning to offices within the UC Davis International Center, located on the corner of Russell Boulevard and California Avenue. The International Center is now open. This fall quarter, Global Affairs teams will work in a hybrid format, offering limited in-person advising. Other services will be available in a virtual or hybrid format.

In addition to the difficulty of COVID-19 this last year and a half, some members of our international community, many of whom are separated from loved ones, now face additional grief, uncertainty, and fear.
University of California, Davis in the US is encouraging Afghans to use its cloud-based Article 26 Backpack to safely store records and credentials. “Backpack is a way to safely curate, store and share all elements of an individual’s academic and career progress and preparation,” said Keith David Watenpaugh, professor and director, UC Davis Human Rights Studies, Article 26 Backpack.
In recent days, news of Afghanistan’s citizens in peril, a devastating earthquake in Haiti, destructive wildfires and the surging Delta variant has touched all of us in the UC Davis community, causing grief and sorrow for many. We have Haitian and Afghan families who are part of our larger community, as well as families who have suffered from the fires and COVID-19. I want to express my condolences to those who have experienced losses resulting from these tragedies. These events can be overwhelming, but I am grateful to see Aggies responding to support people in need, both here at home and a world away. Here are a few ways that is happening.
