In June 2020, Universitas 21 (U21) named UC Davis among the winners of its inaugural Global Education Enhancement Fund. Through this grant, UC Davis partnered with Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China and Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico to create a framework for teaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Global Classroom modules.

Global Affairs invites expressions of interest from UC Davis faculty interested in developing an international virtual course collaboration with partners at universities abroad to support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On behalf of Global Affairs, we would like to congratulate Lovell “Tu” Jarvis, professor emeritus in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, who is retiring from his role as the executive director of our UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center (UC Davis Chile), and welcome Dario Cantù, professor of systems biology and Louis P. Martini Endowed chair in viticulture, as the center’s new executive director, effective July 1, 2021.

On behalf of Global Affairs, I would like to congratulate and bid farewell to Associate Vice Provost of Global Education and Services Fadi Fathallah, who has been named Chair of the UC Davis Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, effective July 1, 2021.

Howard Chiang, an expert in East Asian studies with a dedication to advancing LGBTQ history through international collaborations, joined the faculty of UC Davis in 2017 and is now an associate professor in the College of Letters and Science’s Department of History. His pioneering three-volume Global Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) History, for which he served as editor-in-chief, won the 2020 Dartmouth Medal thanks to its merging of global LBGTQ history into one resource. Born in Taiwan and raised in Canada, Chiang says that throughout the cross-cultural editorial and research process, he thoroughly appreciated working with experts in fields different from his own area of specialization.

Biological and agricultural engineering professor Fadi Fathallah was recognized by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) with the SMV Technologies Ergonomics, Safety, and Health award for his contributions to promote agricultural safety and health.

UC Davis’ Seminar Abroad in Nepal recently earned “highly commended” status in the category of Progressive Education Delivery, as judged by Professionals in International Education, or PIE, an independent media, recruitment and events company.

Jonna Mazet, the founding director of the UC Davis One Health Institute and a professor of epidemiology and disease ecology in the School of Veterinary Medicine, partners around the world to strengthen global capacity for the detection of zoonotic viruses with pandemic potential—including COVID-19. What started as a USAID pilot project at UC Davis has grown to become the Global Virome Project, a multidisciplinary coalition targeting zoonotic viral threats worldwide.
