Global Strategic Plan

UC Davis’ 10-year strategic plan, “To Boldly Go,” is the guiding document for taking the university to new heights of distinction. The plan’s five ambitious goals include global elements that require further articulation, action steps, and concrete measurements of success. The planning effort to develop this roadmap in the form of the first comprehensive UC Davis Global Strategic Plan is now underway.

To provide input for the Global Strategic Planning Committee, please identify your university affiliation, location, and then enter strategies or ideas under the goals from UC Davis' strategic plan, "To Boldly Go." All questions within the goals section are optional. The preferred deadline for input is by November 1, 2019.

Goal 1: Provide an educational experience that prepares all of our students to address the needs and challenges of a diverse and changing world.

UC Davis is working towards Global Education for All, a goal to provide 100% of students—undergraduate, graduate and professional—with global learning opportunities that change their lives and our world. Some examples of global academic, experiential, and leadership opportunities are study abroad and away, virtual international collaborations, hands-on learning and research that take on global challenges in our backyard and beyond, living and learning communities that connect culturally diverse students with each other and the resources of our global campus, and more.

Goal 2: Enable and support research that matters at the frontiers of knowledge, across and between the disciplines, in support of a healthy planet and the physical and societal well-being of its inhabitants.

UC Davis, with its great strengths across many disciplinary areas and culture of interdisciplinary research, is well-placed to make fundamental contributions to pressing issues in the world. Some examples of activities that support this include: research collaborations in other countries/regions; engaging in interdisciplinary research initiatives that have global impact; providing global research opportunities for faculty, scholars and students; and making resources available to support international research.

Goal 3: Embrace diversity, practice inclusive excellence and strive for equity. Make UC Davis a place of excellence for learning and working by supporting a culture that values the contributions and aspirations of all our students, staff and faculty; promotes wellness and a culture of sustainability; and cultivates the open interchange of ideas.

In 2017, UC Davis released the Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Vision with a set of goals, objectives, and recommended action items that provide a framework for UC Davis, as the university seeks to foster a climate of inclusivity and equity for those from many countries, cultures, and language groups (including U.S. residents and residents of California who bring multicultural and global perspectives, as well as those from other nations in the world).

Goal 4: Support our community, region, state, nation and world through mutually beneficial and impactful partnerships that reflect a firm commitment to our mission and increase the visibility and reputation of the university.

UC Davis is committed to strengthening and enhancing the university’s global research, education and engagement efforts in regions around the world. Global Centers will serve as hubs that link UC Davis to the world, providing more seamless mobility for faculty and students.

Some examples of activities that support this and other global engagement include: developing and strengthening international partnerships with universities, NGOs, companies, international networks; providing expertise to policymakers on globally-relevant issues (United Nations, federal, state and local government); pursuing potential opportunities associated with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or other key global frameworks; working with international alumni worldwide, etc.

Goal 5 : Create an intellectual and physical environment that supports the development of an innovative and entrepreneurial culture that extends the benefits of our research activities beyond the boundaries of the university.

UC Davis is well-positioned to make substantial contributions to society by translating the benefits of innovative research, including new products, new medical treatments and new technologies, into the public domain. Further benefits to society result from the cultivation of innovative and entrepreneurial attitudes and expertise that students bring to the workplace and marketplace.
