Dr. Abhijit Mitra received his PhD from the Indian Institute of Technology – Delhi (2017) and his MSc in engineering from the University of Leeds (2011). He is a recipient of the prestigious DST Inspire Faculty Award, 2017, and British Telecom (BT) Fellowship, 2012. As a BT Research Fellow at IIT Delhi, he designed the physical layer of the inter-city elastic optical networks (EON) and evaluated the benefits of operating at a reduced link margin. Due to his research contributions, he has been awarded the British Council (Alumni Awards): Professional Achievement Award-2019 by the British Council. Considering him a young achiever, the Government of India has granted Dr. Mitra the DST Inspire Faculty Award at Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi to design the EON for larger networks. He is currently a project investigator in BT-GRIP at IIIT Delhi and a member of the 5G security working group of India. He has published in leading optical venues like JLT, JOCN, Optics Express, OFC, and ECOC. His current research focuses on optical networks, visual light communication, and quantum communication.

Broadband telecom services have been major drivers of economic growth for India and the U.S. To handle this overwhelming growth, network operators require a high capacity inter-city backbone EON network. Dr. Mitra’s Fulbright-Nehru postdoctoral research gives him a unique opportunity to design this network for larger countries like the U.S. and India. His objectives are to design the topology of ultra–wide band EON, develop efficient algorithms while considering nonlinear impairment routing, analyze network disaster management, and develop a network upgrade strategy towards EON.
