Hipolito Amaral Ximenes from Timor-Leste has a master's degree in integrated chemical and environmental technology from Hankyong National University in South Korea. Previously, he completed an undergraduate degree in chemistry science at Widya Mandira Catholic University in Indonesia.
Currently, Hipolito works with a public water utility company Bee Timor Leste Empresa Publika, as an environmental and quality control manager within the Environmental and Quality Control Department to monitor the water quality, proceeding with the environmental licensing for the water project and controlling and maintaining the health and safety of the workplace. Before that, Hipolito worked with the SPREP project as project coordinator for the water supply project at the National Directorate of Climate Change to integrate the climate resilience design into the water supply infrastructure plan. Lito has also worked with UNDP Timor Leste for more than five years as a national climate change officer under the Small Scale Rural Infrastructure Project and as a national consultant for seven months under the Coastal Resilience Building project, which was specific to the Mangrove conservation. He also worked with the GCF project as an individual consultant for conducting the initial assessment and as an environmental safeguards officer for the Rural Roads for Development project under the International Labor Organization for preparing the environmental licensing document.
As a Humphrey Fellows at UC Davis, Hipolito plans to improve his knowledge in water quality management, environmental impact studies, and the health and safety of the workplace. His professional and research interests will focus on water quality and environmental impact studies. At the end of this fellowship, he hopes to have gained the relevant knowledge and connections to U.S. environmental and water experts to support his region through volunteering with institutions in Timor-Leste to capacitate staff on water and environmental quality management, policy and procedure development. Moreover, in this fellowship, Hipolito seeks to connect with a research professor to continue his Ph.D. in the environmental and water research project at UC Davis.
