John Roy O. Akumu has more than six years of experience in transport engineering and project management. Currently, Roy is an assistant engineer at Kenya Urban Roads Authority, where he designs and supervises a road construction project in Eldas Town, Wajir County, in the North Eastern province of Kenya. On a part-time basis, he also offers his professional services on other projects, such as assisting in project management of the ongoing rehabilitation of Aden-Abdulle International Airport in Mogadishu, Somalia. Roy holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and is passionate about providing solutions to the transport industry in developing nations. He selected the Public Management track of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders because he hopes to incorporate sustainable solutions that are not only environmentally safe and economically feasible but also of high value to end users. After completing the Fellowship, Roy plans to work as a consultant alongside both government and private institutions in designing, implementing, and monitoring long-term sustainable solutions for the transport engineering industry in developing countries while encouraging younger engineers to follow suit.
