Come join Liberty in North Korea for a viewing of "The Jangmadang Generation." Featuring hidden camera footage from inside North Korea, as well as firsthand experiences of eight North Korean defectors, this documentary sheds light on how North Korea's millennial generation is breaking away from their country's status quo. The documentary is about 50 minutes long and there will be a discussion afterwards. Event flyer.

Global Discussions with Humphrey Fellows

This event is an opportunity to have an unstructured one-on-one conversation in breakout rooms with someone from another country. Inspired by the Human Library Project, this is a safe space to learn about sensitive topics involving race, culture, identity, and more. We are joined by Humphrey Fellows from Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Eritrea, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Liberia, Panama, and Sudan. DHI Human Rights Film Festival—200 Meters Q&A with Filmmaker Ameen Nayfeh

Mustafa and his wife Salwa are from two Palestinian West Bank villages only 200 meters apart, but split by Israel’s separation wall. Mustafa lives on the Palestinian-controlled side of the wall, and Salwa and their children on the Israeli side. One day Mustafa gets the call every parent dreads: his son has been in an accident and is in the hospital. Mustafa will do anything to reach him, and after being denied access through the checkpoint on a technicality, he embarks upon a journey to cross the border illegally. The 200-meter distance soon becomes a 200-kilometer odyssey. Palestinian director Ameen Nayfeh’s debut drama shows us the life-threatening struggles of daily life under occupation in an urgent story of resistance, dignity, family and hope. Event webpage.

Franco-American Webinar on Carbon Storage at Farm and Landscape Levels

Natural, agricultural, and forest areas play a decisive role in the climate system thanks to their carbon storage potential. Managing these areas for this purpose would help prevent, reduce, and offset greenhouse gas emissions in order to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This webinar is intended for everyone (students, researchers, teacher-researchers, farmers, institutional actors, etc.). It is part of the webinar series “Climate and Biodiversity Solutions, Natural and Agricultural Spaces, Keys to Resilience,” based on the experiences of two periurban areas: Silicon Valley and the Plateau de Saclay. Estudios Culturales El Colegio de la Frontera Norte), Ana Saiz Valenzuela (Directora General de Sin Fronteras IAP). The panel will include four speakers—two from the UC, two from Mexico—each of whom will briefly address what they believe to be the most pressing current issues regarding immigration laws, enforcement policies and actions, as well as judicial challenges and proposed legislation, in both the U.S. and Mexico. DHI Human Rights Film Festival—A Once and Future Peace, Q&A with Filmmaker, Erick Metzgar

In Seattle, communities are working to break the cycle of incarceration. A promising new restorative justice program based on Indigenous peace-making circles aims to bring healing to families and communities while reforming the justice system. Using beautifully crafted animation, the film follows “Andy,” a teenager facing felony charges, and his family as they work through the program shepherded by Saroeum, a former gang leader. As they look at the status of the broken justice system - prosecutors, judges, and those running the program ask: how much is our society willing to invest to truly change the trajectory of our communities for the better? Come learn about Project RISHI (Rural Indian Social Health Improvement)! Project RISHI is a student-run nonprofit that focuses on sustainable development projects directed towards our partner community Andimadam, located in Tamil Nadu, India. Students work in several project teams with the goal of contributing to the improvement of the community, doing so with the methodological approach of Understanding, Research, Financing, Implementation, and Evaluation. We will be discussing sustainable development utilizing case studies from our previous projects under our methodological and collaborative approach. International Podcasting 101

Global intercultural connections and exchange are becoming increasingly vital to societal and technological progress. However, in-person academic and social exchange can be difficult given global health crises, sustainability concerns over fossil fuel reliant transportation, and national policies governing the free movement of individuals. Podcasts provide an opportunity to connect through space and time in a way that is accessible to many. This workshop is designed to describe the process for approaching interviewees, developing narratives, and creating questions that are both effective and ethical. Our members will share knowledge they have gathered from real-world experience producing and promoting international and intercultural audio content. Attendees will practice developing questions, interviewing partners, and reflecting on their experience. Program webpage.

DHI Human Rights Film Festival—Missing in Brooks County, Q&A with Film Producer, Jacob Bricca

Seventy miles north of the Mexican-US border lies Brooks County, Texas. As the national debate over immigration policy simmers to a boil, its practical consequences are felt in Brooks County every day. The site of an estimated 3000 deaths since 2008, migrants choose this route to circumvent the state’s busiest interior immigration checkpoint and find themselves diverted by a military-style barricade that leads them into the surrounding harsh desert terrain. As a result, between 300 and 600 migrants succumb to dehydration and exposure here every year. Only one in five is ever found. Missing in Brooks County follows the journey of two families who come to look for their loved ones, only to find a mystery that deepens at every turn. The film is a potent reminder of the life and death consequences of a broken immigration system. Event webpage.

Wayang Bali (Balinese Shadow Puppet Play with Music)

Wayang Bali, the Balinese Shadow Play (which features a live gamelan accompaniment), is one of the most revered traditional art forms in the world. According to Balinese philosophy, a wayang performance is a symbol of the cosmos. The dalang (Shadow Master) represents God; the screen represents the world, including the atmosphere; the damar (oil lamp) is the sun and the banana log underneath the screen is the earth on which the creatures walk; the wayangs (puppet characters) are the creatures. The accompanying gender music represents irama djaman, which means in phase with the periods of history. Plots for the shadow play are drawn from the Mahabharata myth cycle. Five brothers are pitted against one hundred jealous cousins in a struggle for power involving gods, demons, magical weapons, and the inevitable beautiful princess. Wayang Bali takes place in two languages simultaneously: the ancient language and the language of the audience. Ticket and event webpage.
