Gella Patria Lobo-Abella is the head of the Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Management, Central Luzon State University, Philippines. As a licensed environmental planner, her work is deeply anchored in addressing the short and long-term needs of the country, focusing on climate change, disaster risk reduction, optimal land utilization, coastal resource management, and food security.
She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Ecology and Master of Science and Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of the Philippines Los Banos. Gella has more than 13 years of experience in the academe, research, and extension. Some of her notable works include the preparation of a comprehensive land use plan using multiple goal-linear programming and engaging in smart agriculture using drone technology to monitor pests and diseases of crops. She is currently a board member of the Philippine Network of Educators in Environment.
Her professional vision is to establish a renowned Regional Center for Climate Change and Environmental Management, with significant impact in the Philippines and Southeast Asia. As a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow, she intends to develop an AI-based policy on sustainable agricultural land use allocation. She is a firm believer that the development of innovative approaches should combine data science and stakeholders' needs, ensuring effective and evidence-based environmental and sustainable agriculture policies.
