Bio

About Luis Nieto

Luis Nieto is a lawyer specializing in environmental law and sustainable development from El Salvador. He has a bachelor's degree in science of law from University of El Salvador, and two master's degrees in environmental law and sustainable development from University of Alicante, Spain and science of law with an emphasis on environmental law from University of Vale do Itajaí, Santa Catarina, Brazil. He is currently working on his Ph.D. thesis on environmental law focused on losses and damages from climate change at University of Alicante.

Luis has more than 15 years of experience in the legal field and has been a law professor since 2008 at the Lutheran University in El Salvador where he is dean of the faculty of science. For the last seven years, he has been dedicated to private practice in environmental law and sustainable development at his own law firm where he advises the government, national and international companies and organizations in environmental law, and drafts environmental policies and laws regarding environmental issues.

Luis hopes the Humphrey Fellowship Program will allow him to strengthen his knowledge of environmental law, sustainable development and climate change, which will help the growth of his academic institution and the national and international institutions he advises. Luis strongly believes that education is the most powerful tool to tackle the environmental problems in his country, and the fellowship program will directly contribute to his students’ training to become actors of social change.
