As you know, here at the University of California, Davis, we are committed to building a diverse community of students, scholars, faculty, and staff. This includes the over 10,000 international students and scholars we welcome to campus from around the world. Changing government rules regarding the definition of persons considered a “public charge” have created much uncertainty among our international community. We hope that the following summary will provide you with an introduction to this issue.
A UC Davis team of 11 international students won the Amazon Alexa Prize—and $500,000—thanks to the performance of their artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, affectionately named Gunrock.
Former U.S. Ambassador and current Chair of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Jeffrey Bleich delivered the keynote address at the 2019 International Graduation Celebration, which also featured remarks from Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor Ralph J. Hexter, Vice Provost and Associate Chancellor of Global Affairs Joanna Regulska, Director of Services for International Students and Scholars Wesley Young, and graduating managerial economics major Rannie (Langan) Zen.
Every year, UC Davis welcomes thousands of international students like Gupta, offering them academic and career growth opportunities that are hard to access in many countries.
Colleges are seeing increases in processing times for international students applying for work authorization through the Optional Practical Training, or OPT, program, leaving some students with job or internship offers unable to take up their positions on time.
Annually, Global Affairs invites the UC Davis community to celebrate our graduating international students. This festive event acknowledges the tremendous accomplishments of UC Davis international students and recognizes the support of their families, friends, faculty, staff, and the entire UC Davis international community.

Part of the college experience is figuring out what you don’t want to do. Passion, like discovery, is found through trial and error. Biological sciences and psychology senior Wenzhe Li rotated through two labs at UC Davis before finding a muse in cytoplasmic dynein, a motor protein used for intracellular transport.
A UC Davis team of five international undergraduate students has earned a spot in the finals at the 29th Annual Institute of Food Technologists Student Association (IFTSA) Product Development Competition with their Oakaranchi Crackers - a nutrient-packed cracker made from okara, the soy pulp by-product of soybean processing.
