Despite its proximity to campus (the Islamic Center of Davis is directly across the street on Russell Blvd), Muslim students at UC Davis didn't feel entirely integrated with the Muslim community who attended the mosque in Davis. MSA wanted to remedy this campus-community disconnect, while also trying to be more inclusive of Muslims from across cultures, like the multitude of Southeast Asian and African students at UC Davis who practice Islam.
This fall, a course on intercultural project-based seminar, taught by Professor Philipp Zerbe, will be offered to increase students' ability to work collaboratively on global challenges and will be an extension of the Global Education for All initiative.

Community service is one cornerstone of the Mandela Washington Fellowship and during their six weeks in California, the 25 young African leaders at UC Davis explored a myriad of ways to uplift and give back to the local communities. In total, the 2018 UC Davis Mandela Washington Fellows planted 30 trees in Woodland, pruned and mulched 59 trees along the Davis greenbelt, harvested 960 pounds of produce and volunteered eight hours to prepare and serve meals for Davis Community Meals.
To give guests—ranging from family, friends, and colleagues to academic advisors, local officials, and members of the UC Davis Police Department—greater insight into international student experiences and perspectives, two graduates shared their stories. As an adolescent, Ogbu-Nwobodo came to the U.S. from Nigeria, in hopes of pursuing an education and becoming a doctor. Now, 16 years after graduating high school at the top of her class, the newly-minted UC Davis M.D. is heading to a residency at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital, with plans to practice psychiatry for the poor and underserved.
