Learn more about Nanyangwe

Having over ten years of experience in medicine, there was a great challenge associated with the management of HIV-associated health conditions in a resource-limited setting that solidified my interest in preventive health care. My career goal is to perform research of the highest quality, thereby providing evidence that will influence policy formulation and implementation in order to ensure efficient and effective health care delivery targeting HIV and other infectious diseases among women. Considering the patriarchal society in Zambia, focusing on the female population will contribute to attaining the ultimate goal of reduction of health disparities within communities.

What drew you to your professional field?

My interest in public health, specifically epidemiology, is of a personal nature. Having grown up in a lower-middle-income country, I have witnessed the endless cycle of ineffective public health care policies and systems, with many people suffering and sometimes dying from many avoidable and treatable conditions. It has been my strong passion and dream to contribute towards the improvement in health care delivery to a system that I believe can do much better.

What is something from your country that you would like to share with the UC Davis community?

Zambia is a landlocked country in South-Central Africa and has a population of 18.4 million warm and friendly people. Zambia has a diversity of 73 languages, of which English is mostly spoken. Zambia is home to the world-renowned mighty Victoria Falls and the big five of wildlife (i.e., Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, and African buffalo). Zambia’s economy depends on the production and export of copper, with agriculture also being an important source of national income.

How would you like to engage with UC Davis and the community here?

I want to connect with UC Davis staff and students interested in conducting innovative epidemiological research in infectious diseases in the time of COVID-19. I also look forward to connecting with like-minded individuals who have experience in policy systems for health development. Furthermore, I would like to explore and experience the various cultures and lifestyles within the community.
