Spotlight on Mexico
UC Davis Global Centers, Latin America and the Caribbean supports academic mobility and research opportunities between UC Davis and the region. During the 2021-22 academic year, we will be spotlighting Mexico in public events, student programming, and other initiatives. If you are a member of the UC Davis community and involved in a project or event in the region or with a partner institution from the region, please email Faculty Director Chuck Walker cfwalker@ucdavis.edu, so that we can include in our outreach to campus and external partners.

France-Berkeley Fund Awards
The France-Berkeley Fund invites applications for up to $12,000 in seed funding for new collaborations between faculty and research scientists at UC Davis and their counterparts in France. There is a required campus match of up to $8,000 per award, with the Office of Research funding up to $4,000 per award if a dean funds a like amount. International Connections Reception
March 3 Join Global Affairs for a celebration with globally-engaged faculty, staff and scholars. We will announce the winners of the Chancellor's Awards for International Engagement and acknowledge the recipients of or participants in the following Global Affairs programs: Seed Grants for International Activities, Grants for Advancing Sustainable Development Goals, and the Global Education for All Steering Committee and Fellows. Register to attend.
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Information Session
January 28 Join Global Affairs and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) for an information session about fellowship opportunities in Japan. JSPS, the largest research-funding agency in Japan, has hundreds of funding opportunities available to all fields (social-science, humanities, STEM, multi-disciplinary) for research at all Japanese universities and public research institutions. Attend to learn about fellowship eligibility for pre-Ph.D. students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty, application procedures, and what life is like as a researcher in Japan.
UC Davis Mondavi Center Announced 2021-22 Season, Including Several Global Works
UC Davis Global Affairs is a proud sponsor of the Mondavi Center’s 2021-22 season of performances running October 2021 through May 2022. Among several global works are Pamyua (November 21), Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández (March 18), and Las Cafeteras (April 28). Ticket discounts are available for current and retired UC Davis faculty and staff.

COVID-19 Travel Advisory
The CDC announced that as of December 6, 2021, all air passengers two years or older with a flight departing to the U.S. from a foreign country are required show a negative COVID-19 viral test result taken no more than one day before travel, or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 in the past 90 days, before they board their flight.

Visiting Academic Collaborators Policy
A new policy for Visiting Academic Collaborators, both domestic and international, is now in place for those visiting the campus to participate in or observe teaching, research, or public service activities for more than 10 consecutive working days in collaboration with a member of the UC Davis community.
Just in Time Teaching: Global Learning
Visit Undergraduate Education’s Just-in-Time Teaching resources for a range of strategies instructors can readily use in their classrooms. In addition, Global Affairs has contributed a new section on Global Learning under Planning Instruction and Learning Activities.
Call for Comment: UC Davis Library Draft Strategic Plan
A draft of the UC Davis Library’s new five-year strategic plan is now available for review and comment by the UC Davis community. Read the draft plan and share your feedback by emailing librarystrategicplanning@ucdavis.edu by January 31, 2022.
Global Spotlights
Food for Thought, Transformative Energies and the UN SDGs
With events running between January 2020 and May 2021, the inaugural Campus Global Theme “Food for Thought: Feeding Ourselves, Feeding the Planet” engaged more than 600 participants across a variety of backgrounds and disciplines on the global dimensions of food. Erica Kohl-Arenas, faculty director of Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life, and Ermias Kebreab, associate dean of global engagement in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and director of the UC Davis World Food Center, co-chaired this inaugural program.
UC Davis’ second Campus Global Theme, “Transformative Energies: Repowering and Empowering the Planet,” invites the campus community to explore the humanistic, social and scientific dimensions of energy from January 2022 to June 2023, led by faculty co-chairs, Suzana Sawyer, professor of anthropology in the College of Letters and Science and Rebecca R. Hernandez, associate professor in the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources and co-director of the UC Davis Wild Energy Initiative at the John Muir Institute of the Environment. Grant applications to host a program or event will be considered on a rolling basis.
UC Davis and Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara launch new Lighting Technology Center (CTI)
The Centro de Tecnología en Iluminación (CTI)/Lighting Technology Center at the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in Mexico officially launched on December 9, 2021, in collaboration with UC Davis. Michael Siminovitch, director of the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) and Rosenfeld Chair in Energy Efficiency serves as the UC Davis director of the center.
Keith David Watenpaugh Receives 2021 O’Brien Award for Individual Achievement
Human Rights Educators USA has named Keith David Watenpaugh, professor and founding director of Human Rights Studies at UC Davis, the recipient of its O’Brien Award for individual achievement for 2021.
UC Davis Humphrey Fellowship Alumni Win 2021 Alumni Impact Awards
This fall, two UC Davis Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship alumni were honored with the program’s 2021 Alumni Impact Awards. Selenge Chadraabal (Mongolia, 2017) and Zhong Zhao (China, 2015) received these prestigious awards for their work on sustainability projects in their home countries.
New UC Davis Center to Unlock Agricultural Transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia
UC Davis has established the Resilience+ Innovation Facility to spark inclusive agricultural transformation among small-scale farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia with a $5 million five-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
